Question: Analyze the plot of a well-known film or novel to show how it fits the Hero’s Journey and/or the standard character types presented by Herbie.
I do not think I really need to introduce this movie because I am pretty sure everybody knows what it is. At this point, if you still have not watched this movie, you should just jump off the closest window hoping you are really high in the sky. (Since I know some of you will take this seriously, I AM JUST JOKING OK, do NOT jump off no window, I repeat, DO NOT SUICIDE, it’s fine, just go watch Spider-Man, it’s on Netflix and it’s a great movie)
Whatever, if you haven’t watched the movie and you do not care about spoilers, here is the analysis of the Hero’s journey.
Hero at rest:
- Peter Parker starts off as a regular high schooler.
- He is very smart but he gets bullied by Flash Tomson
- Peter is an orphan and he lives with his Uncle Ben and Aunt May
- His best friend is Harry Osborn
- His crush is Mary Jane Watson
Call for action:
While on a field trip, Peter gets bitten by a genetically modified spider, which will eventually give him « spider-like » powers. He will be able to shoot webs from his wrists, climb walls and he even has a spider-sense, which is a 6th sense that tells him when danger is close (even real spiders do not have a « spider »-sense, LOL).
Peter is eating in the cafeteria of his school when he accidentally uses his powers (not knowing that he had them) and throws food at Flash. He tries to run but Flash catches back to him and tries to fight him. Peter realizes how slow Flash’s punches were (no joke intended) by dodging all of them and punches him once and knocks Flash down.
Once Peter realizes he has powers, he is confused as to if he should use them or not. When he talks to Mary Jane, and he sees her going in a car with Flash, he decides he needs a car to impress Mary Jane, which makes her the character of consequence, and if he wants a car he needs money. He was reading the newspaper when he found an ad that says he could win 3000 by fighting in a ring. Since he would have no chance if he did not use his powers, Peter finally decides to use his powers to win money and impress Mary Jane, but at the end of the day, he does not win enough money.
It is important to mention that although Uncle Ben does not know exactly what is happening to Peter, he is the closest person to him and he is the only one who gives him advice, he tells him the famous sentence that everyone knows: « With great power comes great responsibility » which makes him the Sage.
Into the villain
Norman Osborn is Harry’s dad; he is rich because he owns a company named Oscorp. The members of this company have been waiting a long time for Norman to give them good results on his « super-soldier » project, they give him a two weeks’ deadline. Norman, pretty sure that his product will succeed, tested it on himself. The effect of the product on him was literally to give him a second personality: The green goblin. The problem is that Norman does not even know himself that he is the green goblin.
The hero defeat in this movie would be when uncle Ben’s death because it is the only situation where Spider-Man or Peter lose something or in this case someone important to them, or him, whatever.
After losing uncle Ben, Peter remembers the last sentence his dear Uncle told him: “With great power, comes great responsibility”. He applied this sentence to himself and figured out that if he has these spider-like powers he has the responsibility to use them, Spider-Man was his way of using his powers to the max potential.
In the first battle, Peter has already become Spider-Man for a while. The green goblin attacks a festival and Spider-Man beats his ass and saves everybody but the members of Oscorp who died, because they were the goblin’s first targets.
In this final battle, goblin realizes Spider-Man is Peter so he captures Mary Jane and a bunch of kids he threatens Spidey to kill both if he does not choose one to save, Spider-Man still manages to save everybody. After, there is a pretty small final fight where goblin almost beats Spidey, but when Spidey comes back and is ready to put the goblin KO, goblin takes his mask off showing his real identity to Spider-Man. Spidey is shocked to find Norman Osborn, the dad of his best friend under the mask. When everything was looking like it was going to be fine, goblin tries to kill Spider-Man by surprise but ends up killing himself.
At Norman’s funerals, Harry swears he will kill Spider-Man because he thinks he killed his dad. Also Mary Jane tells Peter everything about her feelings for him but for some reason, Peter says that they can only be friends, but yet in Spider-Man 2, they love each other and they are dating.
